A weekend of mixed fortunes
Claygate 1st XI continued their slow start to the season with their third consecutive winning draw, dominating the game but unable to finish off the opposition at Ockham in a tense finish with some questionable umpiring not helping the reigning Surrey Downs League champions. Lance Mayer raced to an explosive 76 in 12 overs at the start of the Claygate innings which then moved rapidly to 241 in just 34 overs with supporting knocks from Chris Howe and Ben Lane. In reply Ockham never got going but hung on to reach 182 for 9 in 55 overs.
There was more joy for the 2nd XI who made it 2 wins out of 2 with a 40 point win at Dalmore Avenue against Ockham suggesting they could be in contention to challenge for the title for the third consecutive year. Ockham bowled well to reduce Claygate to 83 for 5 but a 97 run partnership between Rufus Legg (76) and Dave Price (34 not out) helped Claygate post 212 in 39 overs. Claygate then took wickets at regular intervals to bowl Ockham out for 111 with newcomer Chris Lewis taking 2 for 16, Chris White 3 for 20 and Tom McKinley 3 for 24.
The Sunday 1st XI also failed to take the last opposition wicket. Old Martyrs finished 196 for 9 after Claygate had given the opposition bowling some stick with a blaze of boundaries from Richard Waller (58), Steve Wells (47) and Dillon Woods (75 not out), reaching 257. The Claygate bowlers strove for wickets on a flat pitch with 2 wickets for Luke Webb and Nigel Abbott and 3 for Steve Wells but they could not dislodge the final pair in a close finish.
