8th July 2006 - Match Report

Australian all-rounder Chris White stepped into Claygate's first team on Saturday - and produced a match-winning innings to keep his side on top of the Surrey Downs League.

With several regulars missing,  White was promoted from the second team and played a pivotal role in  a crucial win over Westcott with a superbly judged 32 just as the game seemed to be slipping from the league leaders' grasp.

Westcott had totalled 184 for 9 with spinner Nuwan Jawaseena taking  4-33, Chris Howe 3 for 44 and evergreen Mark O Connell 2 for 17 .

Claygate made heavy weather of their reply with Jawaseena, Howe and Chris Van Graan all getting out in the twenties .  For a time the innings was becalmed in the face of some tight bowling.

But then White and Vikram Prabhakar, bludgeoning  a quick unbeaten 30 in  his first match of the season, steered Claygate towards their target with Luke Webb hitting  two fours to clinch a vital win with a depleted side.

For the first time in years, Claygate could not muster enough players for the second team's league game at Westcott and had to concede the points - a nasty dose of reality for a club with some big plans for the future.

On Sunday,  Claygate's first team lost by just 11 runs in a thriller near Gatwick Airport at Horley, where the home side hit 217 for 3 declared with deputy keeper Ian Darke snaffling all three victims.

In reply, Peter Andrews hit 35,  Darke 26 , and Steve Wells 28,  but the Claygate star was teenager Tom McKinley who blitzed the bowling with a spectacular career-best 66 in just 40 minutes of mayhem.

But just as a remarkable win was in sight, McKinley was caught on the boundary and Claygate were hustled out for 206 in the final over.

Claygate 's Sunday second team were well beaten by Caterham , whose total of 180 for 9 featured a superb spell from 16-year-old seamer Matt Holmes, who returned 3 for 15 in 13 miserly overs, while Steve McKinley had 2 for 27.

Only Joel Watkins with 23 really made any impact as Claygate were shot out for a disappointing 107 in reply.

Claygate's Under 12 side need only more more win to become chammpions of their league after hammering Leatherhead by nine wickets.

Jonny Andrews, swinging the ball both ways, took 4 for 13 and Robert Darke grabbed three wickets in seven balls before Rory Thomson's 30 and Ben Woods 19 not out steered Claygate to a modest victory target of 72.

The Under 12's also beat Avorians by seven wickets with James Standen taking 4for 26, Charlie Briegel hitting 30 and Harrison Bricker 29.

Reserves keep Claygate in contention

Another superb win by the 1st XI was enough to regain top spot in
Division 1 of the Surrey Downs League. A second string Claygate side elected to field at Brockham Green. Chris Howe (3 for 46) opened with 15 overs of high quality bowling in tandem with Luke Webb's tight spell (9 overs 26). As Brockham sought to accelerate, it needed two superb spells from 2nd XI stars Chris Lewis (3 for 33) and Chris White, Brockham finishing on 210.

Without any recognised opening batsman, all-rounder Vikram Prabhakar rose to the challenge to play a magnificent innings of 96 in a 160 run partnership with Chris Howe (75) with controlled and very effective batting. Claygate reached the target with 4 overs to spare and just 4 wickets down. Taking 28 points from this match, Claygate rivals at the top of the league all faltered.

With all its stars on 1st XI duty the 2nd XI were never going to seriously challenge against an in-form Ockham. Ockham batted first and battered the Claygate bowling for 306 runs. The best of the bowlers were Justin Hannaford (2 for 42) and Joel Watkins. In reply Claygate were never going to be in the hunt. Rufus Legg and Dick Murphy batted more than 20 overs each to ensure they had a chance to draw but it was Joel Watkins with his first league 50 and Jake Dear who put on 75 to take Claygate to a respectable 185 for 6.

The Sunday 1st XI drew at Oxshott. Put in they reached 226 for 7 with Dick Murphy scoring 39 Rufus Legg 52 and Tom McKinley 69 not out. The game really came to life in the final hour as Oxshott looking to chase the total down but finished 3 runs short with Kerry Abbott taking his first ever 5 wicket haul (5 for 49) in a tense finish.

The Sunday 2nd XI won against Hersham chasing 170 for 8 with Alan McKinley taking 3 for 36, Luke Webb 2 for 6 and Chris Louw 2 for 41. Rory O’Malley marked his return to the club with 50 and James McPhail scored 41 leaving 15 year old James Kendall to score the winning runs.

Claygate Under-12s became champions of their division in the West Surrey Youth League with a 22-run win in a superb match against Valley End which maintained the team's 100 per cent record and clinched the title. Claygate qualified for a semi final against Chobham.
