Claygate push for the top with thrilling last over win

Claygate continued their push at the top of the Surrey Downs league with a 600 run thriller at Dalmore Avenue on Saturday, concluding with a one run victory with just two balls to go.

Batting first, Claygate passed the 200 mark in just 25 overs, with Osama finishing two runs short of his hundred and Sunny Mahajan - 70. Claygate declared at 298 for 4 after only 40 overs, leaving East Horsley 50 overs to chase the huge total. Despite Babur Zahereeruddin taking three wickets on a guest appearance back with the club, Horsley got to within just one run of the total. But three run outs in the final overs produced a superb finish for Claygate concluding with a final run out as the last pair headed for a suicidal double run. Near maximum points mean Claygate move closer to the top spot in the League.

The 2nd’s also won – this time against Shere- again with 2 balls to spare! Batting first Shere made 140 – Chris White and Chris Louw both taking 3 wickets.  Claygate patiently reached their target with Rufus Legg the backbone of the innings - 29 not out.

There was victory too for the Sunday 1st’s beating Old Paulines at Thames Ditton by 3 wickets. On a flat wicket, David Wright put in fine bowling performance with his first 5-wicket haul for the club – 5 for 28. Paulines all out for 147. A useful start by Matt Wells (27) and Jason Bryant (34) and a hard hitting 42 by Ben Lane teed up the victory, but it was Wright who guided Claygate to victory, hitting the winning runs and ending a perfect day for Mr Right.

The Sunday seconds were also involved in a tight finish but just missed out against Caterham by one wicket. Claygate made 191 with Joel Watkins 31, Ian Manton 30 and Jake Dear top-scoring with 42. In reply, skipper Steve McKinley took four as his leggies confused, but Caterham eased past the total with 3 overs to spare.

Meanwhile a confident under 12’s notched their fourth victory in a row against Pyrford on Sunday morning. Claygate made 131 with James Standen 28 and Max Kretschmar 21. In reply, Claygate bowled out the visitors for 78, Daniel Marshall taking three wickets and Ollie Dennis and Max Kretschmar 2 each.

Claygate power to the top

Claygate powered to the top of the Surrey Downs league this weekend with a convincing seven-wicket victory over former leaders Tadworth.

Batting first, Tadworth made 209 from 48 overs, Nuwan Jayasena taking 4 wickets and guest opening bowler Babur weighing in with 3.

In reply and right from the start, Claygate’s Osama set the field alight. From the first 50 runs he scored 49 finishing on 65- leaving Nuwan to demonstrate his fine all-round capabilities with an excellent 72 not out. The visitors reached the total with only 3 wickets down and a first class performance in all areas of the game taking near maximum points.

Elsewhere though for Claygate is was disappointing weekend. The Saturday 2nd’s drew against Old Woking holding on with 9 wickets down - 20 runs short of the total. Old Woking set a low total of 186 with leg spinner Steve Wells collecting his second ‘fifer’ of the season, Chris Lewis taking two wickets and Chris Louw two.  In reply, Claygate looked in real trouble at 15 for 4, but Rufus Legg’s sterling 84 not out saw Claygate recover well to a reach a challenging position at the close, but finally holding on for the draw.

On Sunday, both sides sustained heavy defeats. The firsts at home, lost to a talented Old Pedagogues side by 7 wickets. In their 40 overs, Claygate put up a useful total of 233, Rufus Legg continuing his form with 44, Murphy and Guyatt each made 43.

In reply, Pedagogues with a strong opening partnership, put on 127 for the first wicket and were always in control, finishing with just three down with 5 overs to spare.

The 2nds also lost, this time against Burgh Heath. Batting first the home side bowled Claygate out for a lowly 88, Henry Vincent scoring half the runs for the side with 43.

In reply Heath quickly overhauled the total with six down at the close, Vincent again Claygate’s star taking two wickets.

Claygate's Under 12’s colt’s side continued their 100 per cent record by winning a thrilling match against Wimbledon in the final over.

Ben Woods with 30 not out and Max Kretzschmar with 17 helped Claygate post 156 for 7.

Then with Charlie Breigel, Robert Darke and Jonny Andrews all bowling tightly, Wimbledon were left needing 9 to win from the last over, but managed to score only one in the face of some accurate bowling from Kretzschmar.

Claygate fail to press home major advantage

Despite one of the highest scores seen at Dalmore Avenue for some years - 304 for 5 from just 30 overs, Claygate failed to press home their advantage in their Surrey Downs league game against bottom side Nutfield.

In just 30 overs, Claygate topped 300 for just four wickets. Nuwan (41) and Osmana (80) with a century opening partnership - Lance Mayer top scoring with 84.

The 30 over broadside left Nutfield 60 overs to overhaul the target, but despite three wickets for Luke Webb and two for Ben Lane, the visitors frustrated Claygate finishing on 252- 7.

The seconds gave their league position a major boost with a victory in fine style over Tadworth.  Batting first Tadworth made 197 all out, with 16-year-old Matthew Holmes taking his second five wicket haul of the summer in his first league season with Claygate. In reply the Dalmore Avenue side reached the target with seven wickets intact, James Mc Phail 53, Steve Salmon 39, and Rufus Legg playing through the innings with 57 not out.

Both the Sunday matches were shortened due to England’s game in the World Cup - the 1s’st coasting to a 7-wicket victory against local rivals Long Ditton. Claygate bowled well to restrict Long Ditton to 153- 6, Nigel Abbott taking a wicket with his first ball and David Price taking 2 for 38.

The Claygate batting also looked in good shape, father Richard Waller partnering Peter Andrews for useful 50 run start, and then son Simon Waller showing strength and timing and playing his first innings for a year reached 77 not out by the close. He was ably supported by Rufus Legg on 35 not out, undefeated all weekend.

The 2nds playing a 30 over game at home were beaten by London side ‘ A few good men’.  So they proved to be, scoring 197 from 30 overs with Joel Watkins and Kevin Harrington taking two wickets each. In reply, Claygate finished 70 runs short with Watkins and Vincent each making 28.

Claygate Under 12 won their top of the table game at Ashstead with two balls to spare, with Ben Woods hitting 33  and Charlie Humberstone a hard-hitting 18 not out in a tense finish. Skipper Charlie Briegel , Max Kretzschmar and Robert Darke all took two wickets while Dan Marshall produced a tight spell of leg spin.

Claygate win top of table shoot-out

Claygate regained the leadership of the Surrey Downs League as they won the top-of-the table shoot out with local rivals West End Esher at Dalmore Avenue on Saturday.

The teams agreed a morning start so that players could watch the England's World Cup clash with Portugal.

In blazing sunshine, West End were restricted to 198 all out by some fine bowling from pace man Babur Zaheeruddin, who took 4 for 37, and spinner Osama Shabbir 's  3 for 34.

Cripps made 61 , K. Taylor 34 and Watkins 25, but West End's cause was dented by three magnificent catches - two from Shabbir and another from Henry Vincent.

With bouncers and verbals flying in a feisty confrontation,   Claygate reached their target with three wickets to spare with Nuwan Jayasena hitting 51, Chris Van Graan 33 and Sunny Mahajan 30.

The win puts Claygate 19 points clear of West End at the top of the league at the half way point of the season.

In the 2nd XI clash between the two sides,  league leaders West End were held to a draw by mid-table Claygate.

West End piled up 251 for 3 in only 40 overs, but Claygate held out on 155 for 7 thanks to a stylish 43 from teenager Joel Watkins and long defensive vigil from Chris White.  Colt players
William Haynes and Jonathan Glavin distinguished themselves in the field.

On Sunday, Claygate Ist XI fell 15 runs short of victory in an entertaining clash with the travelling Mpingwe side, who hammered 229 for 3 in their 40 overs.

In a spirited effort to reach a tough target,  Ian Darke, just back from the World Cup game in Gelsenkirchen, top scored with 62 while Richard Waller hit a dashing 48 and Johann Wijesinghe smashed a quick 25. But it was not quite enough.

Claygate's Sunday second team scraped home by one wicket as they chased a modest  121 in a  thriller against Albamorphics.

Jake Dear led the way with 43 and  Matt Holmes a useful 21  after Andy Spector's three-wicket haul had dented the hopes of the home team.

In the junior section, Claygate Under 12 side maintained their winning streak by beating East Horsley by 128 runs. Dan Marshall made 31, James Standen 34 and Harrison Bricker 25 in a big total of 188 for 4.

East Horsley were dismissed for just 60 with Max Kretzschmar in devastating form with 3 for 9, and two wickets each for Harvey Tanner, Ollie Dennis and Taras Nalywajko.
