Two tight victories for Claygate
The second weekend of the cricket season saw the two Claygate league sides engaged in warm-up matches against Thames Ditton.
The 1st XI secured a hard fought victory at Dalmore Avenue. They held Thames Ditton to 180/8 in their 40 overs with two wickets each for Luke Webb, Nuwan Jayasena and Dave Price. In reply Damian Ross helped get Claygate off to a start with 28 before newcomer Osama Khan (53) and talented all-rounder Chris Howe (28) took the score along. Claygate then started to lose wickets at regular intervals, Dave Price and Luke Webb eventually scrambling the final runs.
At Giggs Hill Green, an under-strength Claygate 2nd XI decided to bat first and soon regretted their decision as they slid to 16/4 but Steve Wells continued his good early season form with 43 and they rallied to 141 all out. Justin Hannaford showed he could handle a bat with a few late order runs in partnership with Chris White but also managed to run out both his partner and then himself in consecutive balls. Thames Ditton never needed to force the pace and looked comfortable until Joel Watkins came on to take 3 for 21 and then youngster Matt Holmes and skipper Dick Murphy slowed the run-rate but the target was never going to be enough and Thames Ditton deservedly got home with 5 wickets and 3 overs to spare.
The Sunday 1st XI maintained their winning start to the season with a win over Carnegie at Dalmore Avenue. Luke Webb and Tom McKinley took two wickets each as Carnegie reached 160 for 7 before an early and generous declaration which set up a fascinating run chase. Claygate stuttered at various stages but runs from Russ Guyatt (38), Tom McKinley (34) and Dave Price (24) kept them in the hunt and allowed Luke Webb and Mark O’Connell to get them home in the early evening gloom with two wickets to spare.
The 3rd XI rounded off a successful weekend with a 30 run victory over the Albamorphics in the Bank Holiday fixture. Danny Simmons top-scored for Claygate with 36 supported by Joel Watkins (28) before Claygate subsided to 124 all out. But two wickets each for Ricky Singh, Luka Pillai, Ian Manton, Luke Webb and Joel Watkins secured the win.

A damp start to the League season for Claygate
The third weekend of the cricket season at Claygate saw the two League teams start their 2006 campaigns. In damp and heavy conditions they both showed promise for the season ahead.
Fourth choice stand-in skipper, Joris Nathanson took the 1st XI to Westcott where they earned a creditable winning draw. In a reduced overs game, Claygate batted well to reach 176 for 5 off 35 overs with Osama Shabbir top-scoring with 69 in an opening stand of 95 with Damian Ross (57). Once the Claygate seamers realized that it was becoming too difficult to bowl in the wet conditions, Westcott struggled against the twin spin threat of Nuwan Jayasena (3 for 38) and Osama Shabbir (4 for 32) and limped to 136 for 8. With one batsman injured, Claygate only needed 1 further wicket to win the match but were unable to secure this in the final over of the match.
Chris Lewis made his captaincy debut for Claygate as the 2nd XI took on Westcott at Dalmore Avenue. It looked like he might have regretted his decision to put the visitors in as they raced to 90-odd for no wicket in the first 12 overs. But first off-spinner Henry Vincent with 3 for 21 and then 17-year old Matt Holmes, making his league debut, came on to bowl inspired spells. Matt Holmes finished with 6 for 27 to send Westcott into a total collapse that saw them lose all 10 wickets for 40 runs ending 136 all out. In reply Rufus Legg (37 not out) and Steve Wells made a steady start to ensure no early wickets fell. Steve Salmon (42) and Henry Vincent (30) provided the momentum to see Claygate home by 7 wickets with skipper Chris Lewis hitting the winning runs.
The Sunday 1st XI lost their 100% record on another damp and miserable day at Dalmore Avenue against Old Ashfordians. Claygate were put in on a bowlers’ paradise. Only Rufus Legg with 29 provided much resistance as Claygate struggled to 125 all out. Carr returned an excellent 5 for 19. In reply Old Ashfordians were looking good as Halle hit 62 but Ben Lane (2 for 33) and Sebastian Walker (2 for 6) made sure they had to work hard for the runs. Finally after rain delays and some drama in the gloom, Claygate went down by 2 wickets in a tense finish.
The Sunday 2nd XI fared worse at the traditional season opener at Bank of England. Bank made 179 all out having recovered from 87 for 7 with their number 11 guesting from their League 1st XI hitting 51 not out. Joel Watkins (4 for 38) and Ian Manton (4 for 30) making his home debut having only ever played for Claygate in Trinidad and Tobago and St Lucia starred with the ball. In reply Claygate were never in the hunt and slid to 81 all out.

Mixed weekend for Claygate
The second round of matches in the Surrey Downs league saw the 1st XI play Brockham Green at Dalmore Avenue. Brockham Green inserted Claygate but useful innings from Sunny Mahajan (41), Nuwan Jayasena (43) and newcomer Chris van Graan (49 not out) allowed Claygate to declare early on 217 for 9. In reply Brockham Green reached 189 for 8 with Claygate skipper Dillon Woods taking 4 for 25. A second consecutive winning draw was Claygate’s reward.
The 2nd XI went to Ockham and inserted the opposition, quickly regretting the decision as Strevison hit 109 to take Ockham to 237 for 7. Chris White took 2 for 53 and Steve Wells came on late to finish with 3 for 19. For Claygate only Chris Lewis (36) and Chris White (40) scored any runs but a key partnership by two under-14s stars, Jonathan Glavin and William Airey took Claygate to an unlikely draw as they finished on 142 for 9.
The Sunday 1st XI lost at Thames Ditton. Thames Ditton batted first and reached 243 for 9 with their overseas professional, Khan, making his debut for the club, scoring 144. Tom McKinley bowled well to finish with 2 for 37, Luke Webb 2 for 36, Dick Murphy 3 for 59 and Nigel Abbott 2 for 50. Claygate were never in the hunt but reached a respectable 203 for 6 with Russ Guyatt (65) and Dick Murphy (66) sharing a 115 run partnership.
The Sunday 2nd XI ensured the weekend did not go by without a victory for Claygate. They beat the TBC’s by 6 wickets at Dalmore Avenue. The TBCs reached 216 for 2 with Danny Simmons the unfortunate fielder who dropped three catches much to the dismay of his team mates. But Danny more than made up with a rapid 80, 72 runs in boundaries, sharing an opening stand of 80 with Joel Watkins (28). Captain Steve McKinley (54 not out) and veteran Andy Spector then put on 76 to see Claygate home with 10 overs to spare.
Under-14s got the colts season off to a start. They elected to bat against Ashtead but were soon 0 for 2. They reached 49 all out thanks to 28 from Sam Tonks. Ashtead knocked off the runs for the loss of just one wicket, which went to Eisa Backos. This was the first in a series of matches in the West Valley Cricket Youth League. Claygate have three youth teams at under-14, under-12 and under-11 as well as the popular Kwik Cricket programme. Anyone interested please contact Russ Guyatt on 01372 471029.
The club will also be remembering its recent tour of St Lucia with a Caribbean night at Dalmore Avenue on 20 May with the premier of Nigel Abbott’s tour video.

Rain dominates
The third round of matches in the Surrey Downs league saw the 1st XI Surrey Downs League Division One game at Newdigate called off even before the weekend had arrived because of a waterlogged pitch at Newdigate – and it is only a matter of time before we have drought orders imposed…
The 2nd XI managed to complete their Division Three game against Newdigate at Dalmore Avenue despite the weather. Newdigate elected to bat first and after a good start were pegged back by good bowling from Justin Hannaford (3 for 49), Chris Lewis (3 for 18) and Luke Webb (3 for 12) and finished on 129 all out. In reply Claygate’s batsmen did not apply themselves sufficiently and ended up 7 runs short to register a disappointing defeat – a first defeat for the season for the league teams. Only Chris Lewis (25) and Steve Wells (22) managed to build anything of an innings.
The Sunday 1st XI and 2nd XI were both rained off.
So the only Claygate side to win was the Under-11s who played their second game of the season on a damp morning at Dalmore Avenue. Visitors Ottershaw batted first but were restricted to 225 following a tight bowling display, with Kieran McPhail and Tom Guyatt taking two wickets and Jamie Slater and Luke Sheavyn taking a wicket a piece, Hope making her debut as wicket keeper (in the family tradition!) Claygate ended up scoring 248 with Jamie Slater top score with 15 and Hope Dear on 8 but with useful contributions from Luke Sheavyn and David Andrews. It was a good win for Claygate’s youngsters.

Rain dominates again
Both the 1st and 2nd XI matches against Headley Old Freemans ended up being abandoned.
The 1st XI put themselves in a good position by scoring 163 for 9 in 35 overs at Dalmore Avenue set up by an excellent 73 from Nuwan Jayasena but Headley never got a chance to start the run chase as the heavens opened. The 2nd XI game never even started at Headley with a water-logged pitch and persistent rain.
The Sunday 1st XI visited Hersham and registered a convincing win. Inserted on a wet track they started slowly with a steady opening partnership between Russ Guyatt and Richard Waller (22) before Dillon Woods (46) and Chris Howe (52) accelerated to allow Claygate to reach 192 for 6 in their 40 overs. In reply Hersham’s innings never got going with Luke Webb taking 2 for 16 and tom McKinley 2 for 1 off 5 overs as they slid to 65 all out with two excellent catches in the covers for skipper Dave Price.
Meanwhile the Sunday 2nd XI were engaged in a thriller at Dalmore Avenue. They were bowled out for 70 on another wet pitch with Jake Dear top-scoring with 18. But visitors Concorde only got home by 1 wicket in a tense finish with Vice-captain Peter Hartnell taking 3 for 22 and off-spinner Henry Vincent 2 for 17. Claygate did not help themselves with four dropped catches which could have changed the result.

Claygate ease into the top three
Claygate eased into the top three of the Surrey Downs league this weekend with a powerful victory over Holmbury St Mary - with Sri Lankan Nuwan Jayasena putting in a stunning batting performance and the Dalmore Avenue side recording near maximum points.
On the first real day of summer, Holmbury batted first and pushed to 223 for 5 with Osama Shabbir taking 3 for 36 and 17 year old Joel Watkins and Jayasena producing tight economical bowling from the other end.
But the barrage was about to come with the Sri Lankan in first full season with Claygate, blitzing an extraordinary134 not out with a superb display of big hitting. Claygate veteran Russ Guyatt ably supported at the other end with 44. Claygate winning with four wickets and three overs to spare.
Meanwhile the 2nd XI won the toss and in the heat Nutfield posted a useful 242 for 7 - Chris Lowe taking three wickets. In reply, Claygate were never quite in the hunt finishing a respectable 211 for 8, Rufus Legg hitting a solid 60, Dick Murphy 55 and James McPhail 47.
With no game for the 1s s the Sunday 2’s demonstrated their run of excellent form with a 9-wicket victory over Sutton. Batting first in the 40 over game, Sutton made 169 for 9 with Ian Manton collecting 3-18 from 11 overs and skipper Steve McKinley forsaking the wicket keeping gloves to exercise his spinning fingers- also collecting three wickets - this time for 20.
But the batting provided the highlight of the day with the much-improved Danny Simmonds finishing undefeated 8 short of his century. Simmonds and Joel Watkins put on well over a hundred before Watkins was out for an excellent 53, Claygate polishing off the runs for the loss of only 1 wicket.
