7th September 2003 Claygate take their first Surrey Downs League championship
Saturday 1st XI – Won- Headley Old Freemans 181-8, Claygate 182-7 Saturday 2nd XI- Won (Championship winners) Claygate 218-8, Headley Old Freemans 57
Claygate romped to their first-ever Surrey Downs league championship on Saturday with a 161 run victory against Headley Old Freemans.
The second division side knocked up a useful 218 for 8 at the picturesque Headley pitch - Dylan Woods continuing an excellent run of form with 59, Danny Ranger 37 and Henry Vincent 35.
Headley were in trouble right from the first ball, and at 5 runs for 6 wickets the opposition hardly looked like a spitting cobra. Three wickets each for Faheem, Henry Vincent and Peter Shury completed the rout - the Box Hill side finishing on just 57, completing Claygate's first championship title for a decade.
It was a double against Headley for the Dalmore Avenue club as the Saturday league side also won, finishing their season in third place. On a good bowling track, Chris Howe (4 for 51) soon had them in difficulties and Dick Murphy chipped in with a useful spell of 2 for 22, the visitors finishing on 181-8.
In response, Claygate reached the total with 3 wickets to spare, Naheem scoring 62, Davis 37 and Murphy 29.
The Sunday twos enjoyed that rare result – a tie. Batting first Hersham made 171 for 7 with Tom McKinley leading wicket taker with 3 for 29, Ben Seabrook 2 for 45.
Claygate's quota of overs finished with the scores level – with two fourteen year-olds, Nick French and Tom McKinley, both making 50's and sharing in a stand of 105 for the third wicket.
The Sunday first team lost to Ashstead in a lacklustre display. Ashstead posted a useful 192 for 6 from their 40-overs with two wickets apiece for David Price, Henry Vincent and Steve Wells. After a useful start by openers Alan McKinley and Richard Waller (44), three middle order batsmen didn't trouble the scorer and the heart went out of the Claygate challenge ending all out on 120.

Claygate’s top three hopes fade
Surrey Downs League - Claygate defeat- North Holmwood 146, Claygate 140.
Claygate’s hopes of a top three place in the Surrey Downs league faded this weekend when they lost a tight game against North Holmwood on Saturday.
Holmwood kept up their record of never having lost against Claygate at Dalmore Avenue when they won by 6 runs in a low scoring game.
Claygate skipper Ben Lane won the toss and inserted the visitors on a wicket, which was always doing a bit to help the bowlers. With Holmwood posting only 146 the bogey looked like it was going to be beaten. Lane returned excellent figures of 3- 25 and Mark O’ Connell and Vikram Prabakar each picked up two.
In reply, only Dasun with 41 and Prabakar 27 showed any real resistance -the middle order looking extremely fragile - three batsman not troubling the scorer. The tailed waged – but not enough- Claygate finishing 6 runs sort – O’Connell stranded on 23 not out.
The Saturday seconds continued their fine run and with only one game to play in the season still have a chance to take the title. Batting first against North Holmwood 2nd’s, Dylan Woods (71) and Anthony Joseph continued their recent excellent form. Backed up by 35 from ever-improving Henry Vincent, Claygate finished in a powerful position with 242 –7. With an opening partnership of 40, the home side looked likely to build a good response, but Peter Shury – who was hit for 20 in his first two overs, then took 7 Holmwood wickets without conceding a run – finishing with a career-best 7 for 20. Chris Chance picked up two wickets at the other end.
Claygate continued their excellent Sunday record with another win – this time against Clapham Old Xaverians. With Chris Howe punishing every thing short of a length a big total looked in prospect. But useful bowling from Andy Bartley pegged them back – Alun Cope-Morgan second top scoring on 21 in a total of 190.
With only four wickets down and 60 to win, Clapham looked set - but a trio of excellent catches from Chance, Hanniford and Wells changed the face of the game. Chance and skipper Peter Hartnell put in excellent spells each taking three wickets- enabling Chris Howe to finish off the innings – breaking a bail in the process. Claygate won by 24 runs.

Surrey Downs league
Claygate 234- 8 Brockham Green 200- 6 Claygate winning draw
Claygate saw another fine weekend of cricket with a second century in just three weekends from in-form newcomer Dylan Woods.
Claygate's league side kept up the likelihood of finishing in 4th spot in the league with a winning draw against Brockham Green. Batting first Claygate posted a useful 234-8 with Simon Bushell 51 and Nalin 32. Mark O’Connell providing a cameo finish with 16 off 3 balls. In reply, Brockham finished 34 short of the total on 200 for 6 with Vikram Prabakar Claygate’s most prolific wicket taker this season again the most successful bowler with 4 for 46.
The Saturday seconds dazzled at Dalmore Avenue forcing a 132 run victory against Brockham seconds. Dylan Woods 132 not out (including 5 6’s) enabled Claygate to reach a superb 259 for 1 off 35 overs - an average of nearly 7.5 an over. After an opening partnership of 72 with Anthony Joseph (46), Woods was then joined by Claygate’s run-machine Rufus Legg. Legg made 73 not out and in doing so, reached his personal 1000 runs for the season, the first time this has been achieved by a Dalmore Avenue player for several seasons. In reply Brockham were skittled by the twin-spin attack of Peter Shury 3 for 37 and Chris Chance 3 for 49. Anthony Joseph again amongst the statistics with a direct hit run-out and two superb catches.
On Sunday at Dalmore Avenue, visitors Surrey Cryptics built a useful 224 for 7 - David Price taking 3 for 40 in a fine opening spell and skipper Nigel Abbott 3 for 30. Despite an excellent run chase, the home finished 22 runs short of the target, the game ending in a draw. Matthew Wells top scored with an excellent 59, Alan McKinley a powerful 32 and Keith Ellis a hard-hitting 35.

Hooray Henry!
A maiden century by 19-year-old Henry Vincent was one of several high points from Claygate’s sun-soaked league fixtures this weekend. Vincent’s achievement on Saturday was made all the more outstanding, as he was the side’s spinner and scored nearly 100 more than the next batsman!
A product of Claygate’s colt system and the next in a long line of cricketing Vincents, Henry was the key to the home side setting a useful total of 240 for 7. Partner for most of his inning was opening bowler Dave Page, who also hit bowling form taking his second ‘5 for’ in two weekends. Page’s 5 for 26 and Peter Shury’s 4 for 26 reduced South Nutfield to 107, having been 60 for no wicket. Claygate took maximum points.
The Saturday league side stayed fourth in the Surrey Downs League posting a disappointing loosing draw. Claygate restricted South Nutfield to 212 (Vikram Prabhakar 4-75), but failed to failed the reach the target finishing 30 runs short, with Russ Guyatt top scoring on 43. A victory would have almost assured Claygate of the runners-up spot for the season.
The Sunday firsts had an exciting victory against Old Paulines. On the hottest afternoon of the year and on a day when every cricket skipper with choice would have batted first, a lost toss looked like an up-hill struggle. But a fine opening spell from Chris Howe initially restricted the batting and spinner Alan McKinley (3 for 40) and skipper Nigel Abbott (3 for 12) contained the home side to 168. Abbott producing a 3-wicket maiden ’golden over’ just before the end.
In reply, Claygate looked in difficulties at 108 for 7, but Scott Labacik smashed a stunning a 52 not out, 48 runs coming from boundaries. Phil Lewis supported ably at the other end.
The Sunday second team drew. Batting first Claygate made an impressive 225 for 9 with a fine 87 from Matt Wells and 52 from 14 year-old Tom McKinley.
Visitors Temple Sheen finished 34 short of the target, with Ben Seabrook taking 2 for 41 and Tom McKinley ending as Claygate’s man-of-the-match talking 3 for 20.
3rd August 2003
Russell Davis made a telling return from a broken hand injury to guide Claygate to a fine win at Capel in a match between two of the top sides in the Surrey Downs League on Saturday.
Chasing 201 to win, the elegant Davis cracked 58 and Vikram Prabhakar 55 to help Claygate to a hard-earned three wicket win which gives Ben Lane's improving side a chance of a top three finish in the league.
But the second team's title hopes were dented when Capel 's last pair held on for a draw on 174-9 at Dalmore Avenue, despite a spell of 5 for 68 from left arm spinner Chris Chance.
Earlier Claygate had raced to 245 for 2 declared in only 35 overs with Anthony Joseph smashing 90, Rufus Legg 49, and Danny Ranger a career-best 76 not out after being promoted up the order.
Claygate's Sunday first team successfully chased 179 to beat Old Martyrs by four wickets with guesting Nairobi teacher Christian Bishop taking 3-38 and stylish knocks from Joris Nathanson with 45 and Rufus Legg, who hit 47.
The Sunday second team lost their last six wickets for no runs in a suicidal collapse at Ockham and lost by 59 runs despite skipper Dave Williams taking three victims behind the stumps and then contributing 25 with the bat.
Claygate's cricket week was marred by indifferent weather and defeats at the hands of East Horsley, Stoke D'Abernon and Sunbury. The high spot was an innings of enormous promise from 15-year-old Surrey starlet Nick French with 71 not out against Stoke.
The club's fund-raising 8--a-side tournament was again a huge success with victory for local electrical company CAG skippered by Jake Dear and including man-of-the-tournament Vikram Prabhakar.
Youngsters awarded kwik cricket medals at Claygate last week were: Tom and Will Guyatt, Sam Darby, Nick Ainger, Matthew Neat, Daniel Blackwood, Ben Macrae, Hope Dear, Kieron Holmes, Matthew Gilbert, Adam Green, Daniel Haines, James , William and Henry Denvir, Jack Baldwin, Emily Davis, Jonathan Amies, David Andrews, George and Harry Bristow-Burrows.
27th July 2003
Schoolboy Tom McKinley produced his best-ever bowling to boost Claygate's hopes of picking up a championship trophy at the end of the season.
Tom, son of long-serving all-rounder Alan McKinley, returned figures of 5-24 with his medium pace to bowl out Westcott for 212 and give Claygate a tense 13-run win in their quest for the Surrey Downs League second division title.
Earlier Claygate were able to declare early after rattling up 227 for 3 in only 33 overs thanks mainly to a maiden century for the club from Dylan Woods, who hit a superb 118 not out.
It looked like rain would have the last word, but Claygate's decision to invest in covers saved the game and eventually helped the side claim a 39-point haul.
The first team's match game did have to be abandoned with Westcott on 160 for 8, but not before the evergreen Mark O'Connell had claimed a season's best 5-44 with David Price returning to something like his old form with 3-29.
Price also played a big role on Sunday, batting out the last 13 overs with last man Phil Lewis to save the match against Australia House on one of the greenest seamer-friendly pitches ever seen at Dalmore Avenue.
The Aussies totalled a useful 175 with Bacon hammering 55 in the face of some spitefully difficult deliveries from Chris Howe, whose marathon 15-over spell deserved more than his 3-41. But Claygate's bowling star was Henry Vincent, who returned a career-best 6-35 to mop up the innings in just 35 balls.
Claygate's batted thoughtlessly amid a rash of mistimed shots with only Jamie Paul(29) and last pair Price and Lewis offering prolonged resistance. They ended on 134 for 9 for a scarcely-deserved draw.
At Burgh Heath, Claygate's Sunday second team were shot out for an embarrassing 25 - yes 25 - and lost by eight wickets well before tea.
Earlier in the day a host of Claygate boys and girls were awarded medals and certificates after completing a summer of kwik cricket coaching from first team regulars Russ Guyatt and Russell Davis with wonderful behind-the-scenes support from Pam Jarvis.
20th July 2003
Claygate threw away a winning position and suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of local rivals Maori Oxshott at Steels Lane on Sunday.
Oxshott were struggling at 60 for 5 against the seam of talented teenager Chris Howe, who produced genuine movement and some unplayable yorkers on his way to figures of 6-38.
But Latif hit a stylish 81 to lead a spirited lower-order recovery which saw the home side post a daunting total of 249 on a difficult track.
Then , in a sensational spell, Graham took 4-19 to reduce Claygate to 24 for 6 and Chovil(3-12) kept up the pressure to make it 43 for 9.
But Ian Darke, returning from injury, mixed judicious defence with some attractive strokes to make 37 and found a defiant partner in last man Phil Lewis( 22 not out).
Together they put on 67 to take Claygate within sight of improbably saving the game before Oxshott claimed the final wicket with half an hour left.
Claygate's Sunday second team restricted Caterham to 187-5 at Dalmore Avenue with Mark O'Connell and Keith Ellis both taking two wickets.
But despite 41 from the back-to-form Matt Wells and 29 from O'Connell, Claygate could total only 142 and slipped to defeat.
Both of Claygate's Saturday league teams were without a fixture over the weekend.
13th July 2003
CLAYGATE 64-0
SOUTHPARK MANOR 63 all out. Claygate win.
Claygate created a slice of club history when - for the first time - both of their Surrey Downs League sides romped to crushing weekend wins in without even losing a wicket.
The first team's bowlers destroyed Southpark Manor, reducing them to 17 for 7 on a fast bouncy track at Dalmore Avenue. Skipper Ben Lane produced remarkable figures of 4-9 while Mark O'Connell had 3-18.
The visitors rallied to total 63 , but Claygate eased to a ten-wicket win with Damian Ross undefeated on 32 and Russ Guyatt on 30 getting everyone home in time for the six o clock news.
Meanwhile Claygate's championship-chasing second team were in equally dominant mood at Southpark Manor, where Dave Page's deceptive in-swingers gave him figures of 6-31 as the home side were bundled out for 136.
Openers Anthony Joseph( 82 not out) and Rufus Legg(38 not out) are in rampant form and knocked off the runs effortlessly to keep Claygate in the hunt for the 2nd XI title.
Vice-captain Suranjan Cooray had been dropped from that game, but produced the most eloquent answer as he hit a memorable 90-minute century for the Sunday second team against Parkhill, peppering the boundary with sixes.
Chasing 203 to win, Parkhill were bowled out for 165 with four wickets apiece for seamers Ben Seabrook and Justin Hannaford, the Aussie producing a sensational one-handed return catch to win the game with only eight balls remaining.
The Sunday first team, needing 178 to win at Wood Street, finished a drawn game on 158 for 8 with Scott Labacik and David Price both hitting 38. There were two wickets apiece for Graeme Wise and John Messant.
Earlier in the day 13 Claygate cricketers joined young footballers from the Claygate Royals on the village's annual five-mile fun run, raising around £4,000 for the new pavilion fund at the recreation ground.
6th July 2003
Claygate 176-3 beat West End Esher 175 all out
Claygate stormed to a seven-wicket win over local rivals West End Esher in the Surrey Downs League on Saturday - but not before the club's current injury jinx had struck again.
An ambulance was called to take Mohammed Khan to hospital with a broken collar bone after a freak fall as he tried to prevent a boundary. He becomes the eighth Claygate player to be injured in a season which is reading like a script from "Casualty".
Claygate needed 176 to win after West End had been bamboozled by Vikram Prabhakar, a left-armer with a hint of the Derek Underwood style. He took 6-41 and there were four victims for keeper Joris Nathanson. Russ Guyatt caressed a stylish 71 and opening partner Damian Ross hit 45 to make sure the target was reached with few alarms.
But Claygate's hopes of winning the 2nd XI championship were dealt a serious blow in a 13-run defeat at West End.
Bacon hit a fine century for the home side as they totalled a useful 198 with Claygate's normally potent bowling attack having an off-day, even though Henry Vincent and Peter Shury each claimed three wickets.
Anthony Joseph, a cavalier opener who plays every innings as if he has a train to catch, smashed his way to 83 and Dillon Woods chipped in with 35, but Claygate's 185 was not enough and they lose their proud place at the top of the table.
On Sunday in a rare cameo appearance at Dalmore Avenue, Phil Graham rolled back the years in a man-of-the-match display for Claygate against Leatherhead, making 42 and taking four victims behind the stumps.
But there was limited support and Leatherhead knocked off the 149 needed to win with three wickets in hand.
Claygate's Sunday second team needed 181 to win at Leatherhead after Dominic Stitchbury's 3-49. But despite 28 not out from the improving Jake Dear and Justin Hanniford's 24, the game ended in a tame draw with Claygate on 145-6.

Claygate enjoy an undefeated weekend
Claygate had an undefeated weekend in the sun this weekend with three victories out of four.
The league side on Saturday enjoyed a second successive victory - this time against Old Woking. Batting first, Old Woking posted 158 with Mushtaq, Mark O'Connell, Ben Lane and Dick Murphy sharing the wickets between them.
Claygate cruised to 159 for 6 with Damian Ross a hard-hitting 53 and Mark Brand - a recruit from the Sunday side - adding a useful 22.
In the reverse fixture, the seconds also won, but this time leaving it until the penultimate ball of the day! Old Woking made 214 for 9, which Claygate overhauled with 4 wickets still remaining. Rufus Legg continued his high scoring season with 62; Joseph added 42 and Chance 30 not out.
The Sunday 1st's continued an excellent season with yet another victory -their sixth in seven games with a last-over win against near rivals Thames Ditton. On a scorching afternoon on a very dry pitch Thames Ditton scored 232 off their 40 overs with skipper Andy Hicks hitting a terrific 145. Ben Lane, Graham Wise and Vickram Prabhakar shared the wickets between them.
After an excellent start from openers Peter Andrews (34) and former Thames Ditton President Steve Wells, all the batsmen added runs, but wickets also fell regularly. An excellent 54 from Ben Lane took Claygate to within 12 runs of victory, but it was left to last pair Phil Lewis and skipper Nigel Abbott to hit the winning runs with just two balls to spare
The Saturday seconds wrapped up an excellent weekend for the club with a draw against Woking side Westfield. Australian Justin Hanniford's 3 for 33 helped Claygate restrict the opposition to 183, and the home side finished 18 runs short on 163-9 with Dillon Woods scoring an excellent 82. Ben Seabrook and Justin Hanniford securing the draw for Claygate at the end.

22nd June 2003
Another excellent weekend for Claygate, with victories in both their Surrey Downs League fixtures.
At home the Firsts, back to winning ways, dismissed Nutfield for 179 all out. Scott Labacic (3-35) and Mark O'Connell (2-43) shared the wickets. When Claygate batted, Damien Ross (53), Vikram Prabakhar (50*), Simon Bushell (33) and skipper Ben Lane (21) all made valuable contributions, as Claygate (180-7) got home by three wickets.
Away to Nutfield the Seconds enjoyed an even more comprehensive victory. Spinner Henry Vincent (5-32), supported by Pete Shury (2-15), skittled Nutfield for 142 all out. In-form batter Rufus Legg (78*), took his season total to over 650 runs, as he lead Claygate (144-5) to a comprehensive victory with 20 overs to spare.
The Sunday Seconds notched up an astonishing win. Visiting Concord batted well on a difficult wicket to post 194. Spinners Chris Chance (4-40) and Rory O'Malley (3-37) were the main wicket takers. Claygate were in serious trouble as they lost early wickets to the Concord attack, before young Jamie Henderson (23) and Tom Law (25) steadied the innings. An swashbuckling 81* from Keith Ellis took Claygate to victory in the final over.
For the Sunday Firsts Chris Howe (4-56) was the only successful bowler away to Caterham (224-5). However Khan (37), Chris Howe (39) and Henry Vincent (33*) enabled Claygate (122-6) to hold out for a draw.

Claygate Sunday Firsts stormed to their fourth consecutive victory of the season. Away to Old Woking, Claygate restricted the home side to 203-5 in 50 overs. The old warriors, skipper Nigel Abbott (3-43) and Dick Murphy (2-20), shared the bowling honours. Claygate's batsman-of-the season Rufus Legg (83) and rapidly improving young Jamie Paul (55) led Claygate's reply with an opening stand of 140. Veteran Alun Cope-Morgan stroked the winning run with an over to spare, to give Claygate (205-5) yet another victory.
At home the Sunday Seconds squandered first use of a benign batting track, and were bowled out for 109 by Hersham. Dillon Wood (27) and skipper Dave Williams (24) exploited the friendly conditions, but the rest of the Claygate line-up wasted a golden opportunity. Hersham looked well on course for victory, before Aussie seamer Justin Hannaford (2-25) and leggie Dillon Wood (3-31) struck. Claygate then decided to drop six catches, to allow Hersham (111-7) to sneak home.
The Surrey Downs League Firsts suffered another defeat. Away to Ockley they mustered 172 all out. The main scorers were Dick Murphy with a painstaking 50, encouraged by skipper Ben Lane (32) and Simon Bushell (27). Ockley's batsmen were particularly hard on normally economical Claygate seamer Mark O'Connell, hitting him for six consecutive fours. Ben Lane (2-55) and Vikram Prabakhar (2-25) were unable to prevent Ockley (173-6) winning with 2 overs to spare.
Claygate League Seconds achieved maximum points against in a walk-over against Ockley Seconds, who failed to field a team.

Claygate win three out of four again
Claygate's good run of form continued this weekend with 3 victories out of four - the disappointment being the defeat for the league side in their Surrey Downs fixture against Salfords on Saturday.
Having held Salford's to 169-8 (Vikram Prabakhar 5- 41) Claygate put up a poor batting display being all out for just short of the hundred.
Elsewhere the club showed great strength in depth reflecting a number of new players coming into the club and quickly making a mark.
The seconds on Saturday, also against Salfords, won comfortably by 7 wickets. Batting first, Salfords made 157 - Peter Shury taking three wickets, but a powerful Claygate display knocked off the runs for the loss of just three wickets- Rufus Legg 40, Anthony Joseph 42.
On Sunday, the firsts made it three wins in three with an excellent all-round performance against Long Ditton. Batting first, Ditton were held to 191 for 8, Scott Labacik 2 for 35) and Claygate's powerful batting form continued with Legg ending 16 runs short of his century and Jamie Paul 34 not out.
The second team also won against Old Pauline's, skittling usually strong opposition for just 108. There were two wickets each for Graham Wise, Justin Hennaford, Nick French and Ben Seabrook.
Claygate moved to comfortable 6-wicket victory thanks to Rory O'Malley (29) and Graham Wise (35 not out) hitting the winning runs.

Claygate's tight finish in the gloom
On Saturday night Claygate relived memories of their February trip to Trinidad and Tobago when a film made of the tour was shown at a packed clubhouse. With the great weather over the weekend, three victories and some fine individual performances, the Caribbean mood spread to the cricket field as well.
The Saturday League side were away at Newdigate in the Surrey Downs League and bowling tightly restricted the home side to 164 for 6, Vikram Prabakar 2 for 32.
In a close finish, Claygate achieved the total for the loss of 8 wickets, Chris Howe hitting a sparkling 70, Jamie Paul 28 and Prabakar and Jake Dear forming an excellent partnership at the end to give Claygate victory.
Both Sunday sides also won - against Bagshot and Ripley. For the firsts, Chris Howe made it weekend to remember scoring 96 not out and with Jamie Paul putting on a terrific 135 for the 3rd wicket. Claygate won easily by 8 wickets.
The second team also enjoyed a terrific individual performance - Ben Lane scoring 102 giving them a 5-wicket victory against Ripley. Lane and Mark Bland enjoyed a partnership of 124.
A staunch final wicket partnership for Newdigate seconds denied Claygate four victories in four, as their last pair played out the last four overs giving Claygate a winning draw.

Claygate's tight finish in the gloom
With three of their four games lost to rain, Claygate's remaining fixture on Sunday lit up an otherwise uneventful weekend.
Claygate travelled to Cranleigh and having lost the toss found themselves batting on a damp track in what proved to be the worst of the conditions.
Rufus Legg was in fine form however hitting an excellent 86, overcoming tight Cranleigh bowling. The track never allowed runs to be scored easily and Claygate found a big total elusive. Pushing for runs in the final over three Claygate batmen fell to a hatrick from Cranleigh's 15-year-old Dave Burke - Claygate finishing on 157 for 7.
The home side looked confident as they started against the low target, but an excellent opening spell from Scott Labacik and Chris Howe had the home side in trouble at 59 for 4. Left armer Vikram Prabharkar then came into the attack and spun his way to an excellent 5 for 27.
18 from the final over proved to be too much for Cranleigh and Claygate failed to take the final wicket, the game finishing in a draw in conditions where miner's lamps would have been appropriate.

Claygate suffer first defeat of the season
Claygate suffered their first defeat of the league season against Ockham, but it took a six off the penultimate ball of the day to do it.
Batting first, Claygate made 176 for 9 - Kahn Mohammed 58 and Simon Bushell 29.
With four outcomes possible as they entered the last over, it took a six from Ockham's Surrey County colts player from club skipper Ben Lane to deny Claygate the win and vital points.
Ockham finished on 180 for 9 Mustapha 3 for 40, Ben Lane 3 for 33 and Mark O'Connell 2 for 57.
The Sunday firsts also lost, this time off the penultimate over. Despite a stop for rain, and in difficult conditions, Claygate reached 181 for 3 - Dick Murphy 54 and Russ Guyatt 51 top scoring. Claygate struggled to make a break through against an excellent Ashfordian opening partnership, but 3 wickets just before the end nearly denied Ashfordians victory. Chris Howe put in a fine bowling performance with 2 for 28 from 11 overs.
There was also defeat for the Sunday second side loosing by 78 runs to the Bank of England.
The success of the weekend was the Saturday 2nd's who had a fine 92 run victory over Ockham. Claygate posted 262- 4 with Rufus Legg 68 and Alan McKinley a terrific 88.
Ockham struggled against good Claygate bowling finishing on 170 for 8 with wickets shared between Henry Vincent, Pete Shury and Dave Page.

Claygate off to a flyer as Lane bags 10 wicket haul
Claygate club captain Ben Lane gave a superb exhibition with the ball this weekend taking 10 wickets in two games.
In their first league game on Saturday, Claygate faced Horsley and Send, and batting first reached 153 with Daman Ross (36) and Russell Davis (31) top scoring.
But Claygate's opening attack of Mark O'Connell (2 for 19) and Ben Lane (5 for 18) were soon amongst the wickets sending Horsley crashing to just 45, giving Claygate almost maximum points from the game
Lane picked up another 5-wicket haul on Sunday facing a strong Carnegie side who brought their Caribbean hard-hitting style to Dalmore Avenue. The visitors racked up 252 with Lane again the star finishing with 5 for 58.
In reply, Claygate lost wickets quickly and were always on the back foot. Dick Murphy provided the backbone with 31 and Chris Howe a hard-hitting 28, but Claygate earned the draw finishing 100 short of the target.
The Saturday 2's restricted Horsley to 152 with Alan McKinley bowling a mammoth 16 over spell (2 for 50), but failed to find the answer to the Horsley attack being all out for 111, Eddie Miles a useful 42.
The young McKinley brothers starred for the Sunday 2's in their draw at Westfield. Tom and Steve McKinley shared 6 wickets as Westfield made 157. Despite a gritty 52 from Des Cecil and a useful debut from Nick French, Claygate finished on 98 for 8.

Claygate start confidently
A thrilling finish in the gathering gloom was the highlight of Claygate's first weekend of cricket, without any of the threatened rain and wind affecting either match.
The Sunday first's faced Ewell-based Rowan, strengthened significantly by the arrival of two South Africans. Skipper Nigel Abbott invited the visitors to bat who posted an excellent 259 for 4, Suranjan Cooray taking 2-37.
Claygate made a lively start, thanks to Dick Murphy and Rufus Legg. Opener Steve Wells also impressed, just missing his first 50 of the season. At 135 for 4, Chris Howe and Steve's son Matt Wells came together putting on just over a century for the fourth wicket.
At 243 for 4 with two overs to go it looked possible for Claygate to reach a superb victory. Then Howe was bowled for a stylish 73, before two run outs off successive balls and Henry Vincent became the fourth victim of an extraordinary match changing over. Claygate finished just 11 runs short of the total in near darkness.
On Saturday, the firsts looked impressive with a useful victory in a friendly game against Bank of England. Batting first, Claygate made a 189-6 with Russ Guyatt top scoring with 47 not out and Russell Davis 40.
In reply, Bank of England could only manage 114, Peter Shury taking 3- for 15, Mark O'Connell 3 for 12 and Ben Lane 2 for 9.
They face their first league fixture in the Surrey Downs league next weekend.
Claygate, who have only recently retuned from their 5th international tour - this time in Trinidad and Tobago, run four sides each weekend - two on Sunday and two on Saturday. If anyone (of any level) is interested in joining this friendly, village-based club, in the first instance please contact club secretary Ian Darke.
