Claygate and Hersham Cricket Clubs to join forces for 2012

Claygate and Hersham Cricket Clubs have agreed to join forces in a working partnership for the 2012 cricket season. These two Elmbridge-based community cricket clubs will support each other with players from each combining to play together, running the clubs together and hosting regular joint social events.

Both sets of members voted overwhelmingly to set up the partnership which will come into operation right away.
For next season, the two clubs will jointly run two league teams on Saturdays in the Surrey Downs League and one in the Surrey Cricket League. In addition there will be at least two teams playing friendly matches on Sundays as well as an expansion of Claygate’s highly successful Colts section, which currently has five full youthteams as well as a thriving Kwik Cricket section.

Boosting overall club and playing strength is only one of the advantages, the greater use of the Hersham facility at the Coronation Recreation Ground  will be another.
Claygate President David Milner commented, “This is an historic move for Claygate. This pioneering partnership agreement comes at the same time that the club has just been confirmed as Surrey Downs League Champions for 2011 winning both Division One andDivision Three and the development of the much needed new clubhouse at Claygate Recreation Ground. This move really marks our progress on all fronts.”

Hersham Chairman Vincent Lyseight commented, “This is a great opportunity for Hersham and Claygate Cricket Clubs. Both clubs share the same values and social outlook. We hope this partnership will bring together professional and organisational skills from both clubs as well as an enthusiasm to play and enjoy cricket. Hersham and Claygate have been playing Sunday friendlies against each other for the past two decades and many games have been close and exciting, but all have been played in themanner in which cricket is meant to be played. The advantages to both club and community will be very significant.”

Claygate collects double league champions trophies!

22nd November 2011

After superb performances from both our 1st and 2nd XI’s throughout the summer, Claygate collected the Surrey Downs League (SDL) Championship Trophies for 2011, winning both Division One and Division Three of the league. At the SDL Awards Night on November 18, Ross Carmichael picked up the trophy for the highest score in Division One for his brilliant 153* and Dillon Woods the trophy for the best bowling figures of 7 for 58 in Division Three.

This success also means that the 2nd XI is promoted and will play in the 2nd division of the SDL next year.

1st XI skipper Vikram Prabhakar commented, “After winning the 2nd Division in 2010, our upward progress continued. There is no feeling better than winning the league for the second time and overall our success is indicative of generally improving standards at the club.”

Club Secretary Rufus Legg continued, “This has been a very memorable year for Claygate with the start of construction of our new clubhouse and a terrific year on the field. This even surpasses the achievement of 2004 when we won both divisions of the old Surrey Downs League. With the new clubhouse and some of our talented colts coming through  2012 could be even more memorable.”

Claygate Cricket Club announce new shirt sponsors

Deal is the company’s second sponsorship agreement with the club

Claygate Cricket Club has announced a new multi-year shirt sponsorship deal with local estate agent Gascoigne Billinghurst worth £2500.

Gascoigne Billinghurst have already agreed to sponsor part of the new clubhouse on Claygate Recreation Ground and this new deal brings their support to a total of £7500.

Managing Partner Simon Dunand commented, “We are delighted to be extending our support to the cricket club in this way. The first element of our support was about helping the development of the new clubhouse, which will be for more general use by the community. This is more specifically about the cricket club and will particularly enable them to continue to invest in improved coaching and equipment for the youngsters and to help improve overall playing standards. We hope the club will benefit significantly.”

Claygate Cricket Club’s President David Milner commented, “This is great news for us as all the focus recently has been on the clubhouse and not the club. We are always trying to improve our playing standards and we have a big investment and commitment to youth cricket.  Our 1st XI were champions of the Surrey Downs Second Division last year and this season will play in the top flight. These are big commitments for a club of our size and we are delighted that Gascoigne Billinghurst is helping us in this way!”

Meanwhile the building of the new clubhouse should start in the spring.  Around £300,000 has been raised in just a year and the club hopes to announce the final design and building schedule shortly.

Recreation Ground gets a spruce up!

Claygate participates in Nat West Cricket Force day!

CCC participated last Saturday (April 9th) in a national volunteering initiative aimed at improving the nation’s cricketing facilities. NatWest Cricket Force is an England and Wales Cricket Board initiative which encourages cricket supporters, their friends and families to give something back to their local community cricket club by volunteering to undertake renovations to clubhouses and grounds over a weekend before the start of the season.

Around the country the event prompted an estimated 85,000 volunteers working at a total of nearly 2000 clubs.

After the day, coordinator Richard Waller commented, “Thanks to all those came along (you know who you are!) and helped make some good improvements for the coming season. A pity there weren't more, (you know who you are!).

“We managed to paint the sight screens, reset three of the corner posts around the square in concrete, plant a new hedge alongside the containers, clear out and tidy up at the back of the pavilion and stretch and refix the artificial wicket.

“There is plenty more to do next Saturday (16th April)  when we sort out the pavilion for the new season. Please try to come along in the morning to help with that work”.

A successful year ...on and off the field!

A successful year both on and off the field was marked by an excellent Dinner Dance at Claygate Village Hall on Friday 26th November. Thanks to Graham and Rufus for the organisation and Danny for the catering. A terrific effort from everyone.

With the 1st XI achieving promotion to the first division of the Surrey Downs League and the clubhouse appeal getting close to its total it’s been a busy and demanding year.

Already plans are begin made for next season, with colts training and fixtures being planned, cricket week opponents being clarified and a whole host of activity around the clubhouse underway.

But the game ultimately is about what happens on the pitch and our awards recognise that. Sahan Wijisekera took the batting cup, Simon Pitt the bowling cup, but perhaps the most sought after is the players player award given to the player who in the opinion of all members has made the greatest playing contribution. This year the award went to Joel Watkins...congratulations Joel. Very well deserved!

 Champions!

After securing promotion last weekend, Claygate needed a winning draw against second placed North Holmwood to ensure themselves of the Surrey Downs League second division title. Instead they won emphatically by 70 runs to take the league title with style!

Having won the toss, North Holmwood surprisingly fielded first, thinking the overcast conditions would favour the bowlers. Claygate saw off Darryl Goff their main bowling threat through good application by the two batting mainstays, Sahan Wijesekera (47) and Ross Carmichael (32). Having done all the hard work they both however fell before the home side had 100 on the board, leaving the Claygate innings in balance at 99 for 4. Man of the match Matt Holmes (55) and Steve Talboys (47) then crafted a 102 run partnership on a difficult batting track with some excellent running between the wickets.  A minor collapse at the end left Claygate at 234 for 8 at the end of 48 overs.

North Holmwood started well and raced along at 6 an over against some erratic new ball bowling. But then Matt Holmes (2-26 off 8 overs) decisively turned the match Claygate's way by taking the two key wickets off successive deliveries. The middle order resisted well but skipper Vikram Prabhakar (2-9 off 5 overs) also took ‘two off two’ to leave North Holmwood tottering at 105 for 5. Luke Webb (3-37 off 9 overs) used his off cutters effectively on a wearing pitch and with Tom Mckinley (2-22 off 4.2 overs), brought Claygate the win by 70 runs and the league title.

Skipper Vikram Prabhakar said, "It’s been a very good season and a job well done but our batsmen will need to be consistent and contribute more to do well in the first division next year. Many thanks too to Phillipa Rae, Fergie and Jeff Meers who have also contributed towards a memorable season."

Secretary Rufus Legg said, "The team has played brilliantly throughout. The title is well deserved."  President David Milner added, "After the promotion last weekend, I expected the team to win the title and they’ve done so in style."

The Second XI also won against third division leaders Horsley and Send. A victory for the Second XI in the last game of the season could give Claygate a double title, a feat last achieved by the club in 2004.

Claygate Primary School are Surrey Kwik Cricket champions!

Claygate Primary School have become Surrey Kwik Cricket champions after beating Bishop Gilpin School from Wimbledon in a nail biting final!

Kwik Cricket is a form of the game played by primary schools using plastic bats and balls but incorporating all of the skills used in the adult game.

Claygate Primary School won through to the Surrey Finals after two rounds hosted by Claygate CC. The Surrey Finals were organised by Surrey CCC and held at Epsom College, and included 18 teams from within the ‘cricket boundary’ of Surrey, including Lambeth, Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton and all of Surrey.

Claygate won their first round of matches comfortably to put them into the winners group, and then progressed from there to reach the final against Bishop Gilpin. That proved to be a very close game, but Claygate just edged it.

Both schools will now go forward to the South East regional final to represent Surrey against the top teams from Kent, Sussex and Middlesex, to be played in July at the Sussex County Ground at Hove.

Claygate Primary School Headteacher Darryl Taylor commented “This a terrific result for us and our boys played brilliantly throughout. The Surrey final was a great event, but going to Hove will be a real treat for the boys to play at such a great venue. A huge thank to you all at Claygate Cricket Club who have been so supportive and have provided regularly weekly training before school. To become County Champions is really special and is obviously a feather in our cap, but also one that Claygate CC should be very proud of."

Fundraising Car Wash

Another successful fundraising event  - this time  a Car Wash – was held at Claygate Village Hall car park on Saturday March 26th raising another £315 for the new clubhouse fund. A team of ‘washers’ from 6 to 60 helped wash cars for 4 hours, afterwards retiring to the Griffin for a well earned beer.

Event organiser David Price commented, “It was a great effort and thanks to all those who turned up, particularly some of the colts and the complete Schultz family! Not only did we raise over £300 but we had a great time getting wet and soapy! Thanks too to Danny for the bacon butties and teas and coffees and to Claygate Village Hall for the loan of the car park for a morning”.

Plans Announced for a new multi-sport club house in Claygate

Claygate Recreation Ground Trust (CRGT) has submitted plans to Elmbridge Borough Council (EBC) to develop a new multi-sport club house adjacent to the existing building on Claygate Recreation Ground.

The new facility will replace the existing building which is more than 60 years old and generally in poor condition. CRGT have looked at refurbishment options but concluded these would not be cost effective nor in the community’s interests.

This will be the latest in a number of improvements to the Recreation Ground. The cricket square has been improved, the woodland partially cleared and hedges trimmed back and shaped. A path has been installed from Dalmore Avenue leading to a new access to the primary school and additional storage for sports equipment should be ready by the spring of 2010, together with new fencing and a new main gate to Dalmore Avenue.

The club house will cost of the order of £275,000 and should be in use in about nine to twelve months after construction commences. The new building will be timber clad and will have an area of approximately 200 square metres. It will be designed to be secure against forced entry and vandalism, but will be sympathetic and appropriate to its location. It will comprise of increased space for changing, modern indoor toilets and showers, a room for match officials and enhanced kitchen facilities. It will also have a lounge area that can accommodate club meetings and wider community use.

In designing the building, the architects, Crane & Associates of Esher have endeavoured to comply with guidelines from the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Football Foundation.

With hygienic facilities and improved access, it is envisaged that the new building will attract a wide range of community groups in addition to the main users - Claygate Cricket Club and Claygate Royals Football Club.

CRGT Chairman Nick Hayes commented, “This is what Claygate needs,a new club house that will provide our teams with a modern facility to suit one of the top recreation grounds in Surrey. The old building does not meet the standards of the Surrey FA or Surrey CCC. We believe the new design represents the very best value-for-money and will be easy on the eye. We hope it will attract more Claygate residents to play sports.”

Claygate Cricket Club in particular has been promoting the need for a new club house for many years and they are prime movers in this current proposal. Several Claygate CC members are trustees of CRGT and actively participate in the management of the Recreation Ground.

CRGT and Claygate CC have agreed that for the purposes of this development, they will enter into a joint agreement for the funding, management and maintenance of the new facility.

Both the cricket and football clubs have committed to raise money to support the new club house and CRGT are also applying for funds from Elmbridge Borough Council, Biffa, the Football Foundation and the England and Wales Cricket Board. In addition, the target for commercials Cricket Club Committee member Nigel Abbott explained, “There will be a wide scope for businesses or individuals in the community to help support a unique, highly attractive and visible local development and we will be releasing details of how everyone can help once we have planning permission in place. There will be a range of sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals to sponsor rooms, walls or individuals bricks within the new club house. Sponsorship of the whole building is available, and we would be very happy to negotiate naming rights on this basis or on each dressing room, kitchen etc. If we can achieve more than this target it will enable us to lower the levels for other fund raising activities or loans.

This is a really exciting development, not only for the Recreation Ground but for Claygate as a whole. We believe the project that we are launching will create an attractive community facility for everyone in the community for many years to come.”
