Claygate Primary School- Press Release

4th July 2010

Claygate Primary School are Surrey Kwik Cricket champions!

Claygate Primary School have become Surrey Kwik Cricket champions after beating Bishop Gilpin School from Wimbledon in a nail biting final!

Kwik Cricket is a form of the game played by primary schools using plastic bats and balls but incorporating all of the skills used in the adult game.

Claygate Primary School won through to the Surrey Finals after two rounds hosted by Claygate CC. The Surrey Finals were organised by Surrey CCC and held at Epsom College, and included 18 teams from within the ‘cricket boundary’ of Surrey, including Lambeth, Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton and all of Surrey.

Claygate won their first round of matches comfortably to put them into the winners group, and then progressed from there to reach the final against Bishop Gilpin. That proved to be a very close game, but Claygate just edged it.

Both schools will now go forward to the South East regional final to represent Surrey against the top teams from Kent, Sussex and Middlesex, to be played in July at the Sussex County Ground at Hove.

Claygate Primary School Headteacher Darryl Taylor commented “This a terrific result for us and our boys played brilliantly throughout. The Surrey final was a great event, but going to Hove will be a real treat for the boys to play at such a great venue. A huge thank to you all at Claygate Cricket Club who have been so supportive and have provided regularly weekly training before school. To become County Champions is really special and is obviously a feather in our cap, but also one that Claygate CC should be very proud of."

Plans Announced for a new multi-sport club house in Claygate

Claygate Recreation Ground Trust (CRGT) has submitted plans to Elmbridge Borough Council (EBC) to develop a new multi-sport club house adjacent to the existing building on Claygate Recreation Ground.

The new facility will replace the existing building which is more than 60 years old and generally in poor condition. CRGT have looked at refurbishment options but concluded these would not be cost effective nor in the community’s interests.

This will be the latest in a number of improvements to the Recreation Ground. The cricket square has been improved, the woodland partially cleared and hedges trimmed back and shaped. A path has been installed from Dalmore Avenue leading to a new access to the primary school and additional storage for sports equipment should be ready by the spring of 2010, together with new fencing and a new main gate to Dalmore Avenue.

The club house will cost of the order of £275,000 and should be in use in about nine to twelve months after construction commences. The new building will be timber clad and will have an area of approximately 200 square metres. It will be designed to be secure against forced entry and vandalism, but will be sympathetic and appropriate to its location. It will comprise of increased space for changing, modern indoor toilets and showers, a room for match officials and enhanced kitchen facilities. It will also have a lounge area that can accommodate club meetings and wider community use.

In designing the building, the architects, Crane & Associates of Esher have endeavoured to comply with guidelines from the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Football Foundation.

With hygienic facilities and improved access, it is envisaged that the new building will attract a wide range of community groups in addition to the main users - Claygate Cricket Club and Claygate Royals Football Club.

CRGT Chairman Nick Hayes commented, “This is what Claygate needs,a new club house that will provide our teams with a modern facility to suit one of the top recreation grounds in Surrey. The old building does not meet the standards of the Surrey FA or Surrey CCC. We believe the new design represents the very best value-for-money and will be easy on the eye. We hope it will attract more Claygate residents to play sports.”

Claygate Cricket Club in particular has been promoting the need for a new club house for many years and they are prime movers in this current proposal. Several Claygate CC members are trustees of CRGT and actively participate in the management of the Recreation Ground.

CRGT and Claygate CC have agreed that for the purposes of this development, they will enter into a joint agreement for the funding, management and maintenance of the new facility.

Both the cricket and football clubs have committed to raise money to support the new club house and CRGT are also applying for funds from Elmbridge Borough Council, Biffa, the Football Foundation and the England and Wales Cricket Board. In addition, the target for commercials Cricket Club Committee member Nigel Abbott explained, “There will be a wide scope for businesses or individuals in the community to help support a unique, highly attractive and visible local development and we will be releasing details of how everyone can help once we have planning permission in place. There will be a range of sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals to sponsor rooms, walls or individuals bricks within the new club house. Sponsorship of the whole building is available, and we would be very happy to negotiate naming rights on this basis or on each dressing room, kitchen etc. If we can achieve more than this target it will enable us to lower the levels for other fund raising activities or loans.

This is a really exciting development, not only for the Recreation Ground but for Claygate as a whole. We believe the project that we are launching will create an attractive community facility for everyone in the community for many years to come.”
