29th May - Capel v Claygate
On an overcast day and with some light showers, Dalmore Avenue escaped the heavy deluges which lashed other areas locally. As a result of the rain, the match was reduced to 75 over,
The dry hard pitch, with cracks made fresh by the showers, looked as if it would assist the bowlers so Capel, having won the toss decided to bowl first.
There were two significant partnerships in Claygate's innings. The first was a 46 run first wicket stand in 8 overs with Ross Carmichael continuing his form from the previous week to score 43 and an unbeaten 55 run hurricane in the last six over’s in which Henry Vincent (58*) changed gear to bulldoze 44 runs in the last 3 overs of the innings.
With Lance Mayer scoring a quick 26 at the top, and a familiar middle order collapse, Claygate declared at 214 for 8 after 36 overs. Capel’s young spinner Duncan Paul bamboozled the batsmen to take 5-61.
With the pitch and weather then assisting the seamers, Luke Webb (2-18) and Simon Pitt (2-28) provided the opening breakthroughs to reduce Capel to 29-4. This was followed up by Joel Watkins (3-32) and Vikram Prabhakar (2-14) to ensure that Capel Captain’s Paul Grove's resistance ended up on the losing side
Claygate won by 113 runs and more importantly got maximum points in the lead up to three crunch games in June which will substantially determine Claygate's performance in the Surrey Downs Second Division League this season.
