Claygate go top with last ball victory!
After just three games in the top flight of the Surrey Downs league,
Claygate are now first in the table after a last ball
victory ensured the 1st XI’s winning run as they beat visitors Capel by 138
runs at Dalmore Avenue on Saturday.
Batting first after losing the toss, Claygate's innings was built around Ross
Carmichael's solid 96 and Chris Howe's return to form with a fluent 72 .Both
were involved in a 131 run fourth wicket stand after the departure of Nuwan Jayasena
(42). Claygate declared at 266 for 5 after 43 overs.
Capel showed a cautious hand by progressing to only 11 for 1 after 10 overs,
but accelerated to 64 for 4 after 20 overs. Medium pacer Joel Watkins making
inroads into the top order taking 3-28 from just 7 overs.
A seventh wicket stand between D Jacques
(uncle) and R Jacques (nephew) took Capel close to a draw. But at 124-6 the end
of 39 overs, Nuwan Jayasena in his return spell had other ideas and ran through
the lower order to end with 4-26 off 11 overs including a last ball wicket which
just removed the leg stump bail to give Claygate 38 points from the game.
Three catches each for Luke Webb and Chris Howe capped what was an excellent all
round team effort by Claygate. In a turning moment for the game, Ben Lane at second slip adroitly 'booted' a ball for Chris
Howe to dive and catch the ball inches off the ground to dismiss Jacques
senior.
Claygate 2nd XI also won but
in very different style against South Park Manor. Claygate won the toss and
elected to bowl first. South Park Manor found it extremely difficult to score
with tight and accurate Claygate bowling eventually being all out for 63.
Justin Hannaford took 3 wickets, Dillon
Woods 4 for 7 and Marcus Wood 2 for 2.
In reply, Claygate knocked
off the score in just eleven overs with Damian Ross 28 not out and Scott
Kanther in his first game for the 2nd XI 31 not out. A convincing 10 wicket
win.
A minute's silence was observed at the home game in remembrance of Paddy
Walsh who was closely associated with the club for many years and has the
pavilion bar named in recognition of his contributions to the club.
