Claygate loose opener in last ball thriller!
A thrilling finish with a boundary off the last ball of the match gave Esher 3rd XI victory over local rivals Claygate in the opening friendly game of the season at Dalmore Avenue.
Conditions on the Recreation Ground looked more like the end of May with a green top and a dry outfield and home skipper Vikram Prabhakar opted to bat. After just 10 overs though , Claygate were in real problems with four top order batsman back in the pavilion and only 21 on the board. But a 92 run partnership from Paddy Willard (62) and debutante Alan Frewer (44) took Claygate close to 200 and then skipper Vikram Prabakar produced a cavalier finish with 33 not out at the end and the home side reaching 232 all out.
After tight bowling at the start of the Esher innings from Tom Gallyer and Henry Vincent, wickets started to fall quickly when Luke Webb (4 for 36) and Nigel Abbott (2 for 14) took over. At 66 for 6 it looked a lost cause for the visitors, but Esher’s middle-order teenagers both scored 50’s and built a fine century stand. Runs were scored as wickets continued to fall, but Esher just got over the line with 9 wickets down scoring 13 off the final over and a boundary off the last ball.
A highly entertaining opening game of the season.
